Connotations and Denotations

We've had an introduction to connotations and denotations in my OCS English 2 Internship at Hayesville High School. The student's are sophomore's. Here is an example of the way connotations and denotations can be used. I often remind the students that denotations and dictionary both start with "d" as an easy way to remember the difference. This shows a good example of two different connotations and the denotation.

The word this example is exploring is, London. It gives the single dictionary denotation and shows two different perspectives for connotations. There are some overlap based on knowledge but there are also differences. I bet the connotation that you have is different too!

Click here to go to the website where this example was taken from. If you scroll down the page, you will see how they explore the differences between connotations and denotations and how they are used.
